Issue #115: Throwing shade at retrograde
Good morning, shoppers!
OK, so it’s only been a few days, but can we all agree that this round of Mercury in retrograde is a real drag? I’ve already had time zone mixups, unexpected time-consuming software updates and more. Could we just not?
Weirdly, that doesn’t mean we can call off our daily stuff. So here we are, writing (books are hard, did you know?), riding (viva la Citi Bike!), and generally keeping on keeping on. How are the planets treating you?

If I strategized for anything the way I did for Target’s fall designer collection release, I’d be a millionaire by now. After weeks of research, making careful selections, downloading the Target app and favoriting everything I thought I couldn’t live without, the moment of truth came last Friday night, or should I say, early Saturday morning, when a bleary-eyed version of myself placed an order at 3 a.m. Like most high/low collaborations, it was a true gamble. However, my go big game plan paid off because I only kept one piece. The garment worth writing home about? Nili Lotan’s double-breasted overcoat, a classic, longish lightweight fall coat that elevates an old pair of black jeans and dusty boots in a jiffy. At $80, it’s cheap, chic and unlike most of the drop, still available. —MC
Hello, world. Meet my ankles. I’ve stepped into the brave new world of non-skinny jeans with this medium-wash, ankle-flashing pair from Madewell, and I feel…medium about it? They’re in the mix on a probationary basis, I’ll report back on whether I fall weeping back into the kind embrace of my faithful dark wash skinnies soon. —KW
For someone who owns a bicycle, I spend a lot of time on Citi Bike. There’s a docking station a block away from my apartment, meaning it’s hard to justify an Uber when I pass it almost daily. I spent the summer zipping around Brooklyn in outfits and accessories should never associate with bikes (see: slits; front and side, massive tote bags, bottles of wine, library books, platform espadrilles). After months of awkwardly cruising, I finally found my go-to biking bag. This crossbody from A.P.C. is the ideal size and shape to sling over my shoulder and behind my back while furiously pedaling up Vanderbilt. And once you dismount, it’s cute enough that you’ll look like you didn’t bike to your destination at all. —MC
I’ve found myself in the peculiar place of visiting my dermatologist roughly every three weeks for something or another. Every follow-up appointment reveals another minor nagging issue that requires further review. Maybe this is what it is to be in your thirties. Or maybe she just likes hanging out with me. Either way, one rec for my derm-slash-bestie had me going from “yeah right” to rec in record time: Neutrogena Norwegian Formula hand lotion. I’ve never been that hand lotion gal, but I am now, thanks to this miracle cream. It almost looks like Neosporin, but it sinks in in record time and leaves your paws feeling silky smooth. I’m now buying it in bulk so I’ll never run out. She also swears by BalmX for scar healing and sealing in topical antibiotics and steroid creams anywhere on the body, but I’ll let you do with that what you will. —KW
Google “signet ring” and under “People Also Ask” you’ll find a great question: “Is it posh to wear a signet ring?” You’ll soon discover there are no real answers (aside from being warned not to wear one at uni) but posh or not, the trend remains. Inspired by the designer’s mother-in-law’s Claddagh ring, this petite heart signet ring from Kinn Studio puts a new spin on an old favorite. Better sweet than posh any day. —MC
The fight for women to make their own choices about their bodies and pregnancies continues, and the Yellowhammer Fund, an organization serving Alabama and the Deep South, is a trusted ally. In addition to policy and advocacy work, they also participate in mutual aid networks. Please consider donating.
