Issue #121: Twenty twenty-who?
Good morning, shoppers!
Okay, so 2022 isn’t necessarily going swimmingly so far, but you know what, life is what you make of it! We are choosing to focus on the good stuff and having a hearty dad joke chuckle at this allium-specific meme. How are you beating those bleak midwinter blues?

I’ve always had a difficult time winding down before bed. Over the past few weeks, I’ve tried extra hard to implement a bedtime routine, one that doesn’t involve Googling all the things that pop into my head when I’m meant to be falling asleep (for example: “tea tree oil for fingernails”, “Zendaya height”, “North node in Taurus”). To prevent said search bar benders, I’ve been slathering my hands with this ultra thick, rich priming moisturizer from Glossier. I know it’s meant for your face, but it’s been doing wonders for my rough, wintery hands. Just a dab goes a long way, keeping my skin and my after hours sanity intact. —MC
As a kid, I was never terribly….placid. That hasn’t really changed with age, to be real. I jiggle and fidget and mess with my hair. I used to knit during some classes, the repetitive activity of my hands occupying enough of that need for movement to allow the rest of my brain to chill out a little and focus. Knitting isn’t always acceptable though, which is where this multi-sided fidget cube, which now has a permanent home on my desk, comes in. There’s a bumpy part, a little dial you can spin, squishy rubber knobs to squish or twist or tug, whatever your spazzy lil heart desires. They’re for kids, I guess, but let’s just say my inner child or whatever is appreciating it too. —KW
I recently spent a couple of days in Savannah, visiting friends and gorging myself on all the incredible food the city has to offer. Brunch at The Grey, a former Greyhound bus terminal that’s been transformed into a restaurant, was a highlight, as my table was crowded with decadent duck hash, fresh pastries, spicy Bloody Marys and tiny hoe cakes. The place is so beloved, there’s a whole book about how it came to be. Black, White and The Grey: The Story of an Unexpected Friendship and Beloved Restaurant is a dual memoir from Mashama Bailey and John O. Morisano, where they recount the story of how this culinary landmark was born. —MC
Between peeling what must have amounted to hundreds of shrimp and being gobsmacked by all the Spanish moss, I managed to get a good amount of style stalking done in Savannah. Home to SCAD, the city is brimming with college students experimenting with their look, and as I was surprised to learn, as are their parents. While perusing the SCAD bookstore, I spotted a student’s mother sporting a pair of Jordan 1 Acclimates in Brown Basalt. The winterized version of the beloved Nike sneaker, this perfect palette of neutrals (browns, cream, white) lined with fleece reminds me of an ice cream sandwich, which can only mean one thing: They’re at the top of my wishlist. —MC
I love nothing if not an involved cooking project, just as much about the arts and crafts appeal as the (hopefully) delicious end result. So when I was craving dumplings earlier this week, naturally, I grabbed a bag of frozen pre-made ones….and then spent hours researching online. Long story short, I have a bamboo steamer set, Andrea Nguyen’s Asian Dumplings book (recommended to me as the resource) and the Xi’an Famous Foods cookbook for good measure on their way to me. I have dreams of freezing batches and making myself at-home variety steamer baskets in months to come. –KW
